Our September Must-See TV and Movies

The return of our favourite shows is as much a sign of fall as leaves turning colour on the trees. And nothing says fall TV like football and the Emmys! Here’s what we’re watching this month at home and in theatres.

NFL – TSN, September 5

Green Bay plays Chicago on the first night of the official 2019 NFL season. Want more? No worries – Sunday, September 8, is your first full day of games!

The Deuce – HBO, September 9

It’s the third and final season for this disco-soaked, lamé-laden drama starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco. Check out this series about the dying days of the Times Square porn industry from the late ’70s to the early ’80s before it’s gone.

Hustlers – Theatres, September 13

A group of former strip club employees decide to get revenge on their Wall Street clients during the last great recession. The all-star celebrity cast includes Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo, and Cardi B, and the plot was inspired by the true account in Jessica Pressler’s article “The Hustlers at Scores?” Part comedy, part drama – we’re definitely in for this ride!

Downton Abbey – Theatres, September 20

The only thing that got us through the end of Downton Abbey – the most nominated non-American television show in the history of the Emmys – was the knowledge that the feature film would be out soon.  And now, here it is. How will the Crawleys handle the Royals’ visit to Downton? We can’t wait to find out!

Between Two Ferns: The Movie – Netflix, September 20

The hilarious interview web series hosted by Zach Galifianakis, produced by Funny or Die, is now coming to Netflix as a full-length movie. After his DIY show goes viral and makes him a laughingstock, Galifianakis takes off on a cross-country road trip. We can only imagine the ridiculous situations Galifianakis will get himself into.

71st Primetime Emmy Awards – FOX, September 22

With several shows sweeping the nominations (like Game of Thrones with a whopping 32)  and a few long-time series that came to a close over the past year, there will be lots to celebrate and remember during the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards!

The Voice – NBC, September 23

The 17th season of the contest show The Voice kicks off this month. While it will be the first season without Adam Levine in his red swivel throne, the show will be back with other favourite judges: Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, and John Legend – and yes, even Gwen Stefani will coach another new group of aspiring vocal stars.

This Is Us – NBC, September 24

What we’ve come to learn about This Is Us is that we should expect the unexpected. And Season 4 promises to keep us on our toes with more twists and turns. This season we’ll get intimate with the complex dynamics of the Pearsons, but the shifting relationships for all the couples and characters will surely provide enough laughter, tears, and drama to fill the season.

Mixed-ish – ABC, September 24

Mixed-ish is the second of the Black-ish spin-offs (Grown-ish being the other). In this prequel style show, the focus is on Tracee Ellis Ross’s character’s experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ’80s. Black-ish is back on the air the same night for a back-to-back double whammy of the hilarious Ross, her character Rainbow Johnson, and the whole Johnson family.

Carol’s Second Act – CBS, September 26 *Series Premiere

Newly divorced and an aspiring medical doctor, Carol is on her way to fulfilling her dream! Hilarious and very real, Carol and her medical peers are learning that 50 years of experience and perspective can be both helpful and challenging when you’re trying to keep up with a new job.
