These 10 Movies Turn 20 in 2020

2000 was a major year in the movies across just about every genre. In fact, it was so epic that many of the movies that hit theatres that year would actually become the first in franchises that would continue through the aughts to today! Check out our top 10 favourite flicks that turn 20 this year.

American Psycho

Initially debuting at Sundance, this horror flick starring Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Samantha Mathis, Cara Seymour, Justin Theroux, Guinevere Turner, and Reese Witherspoon became a cult classic. Definitely the creepiest movie of 2000, it continues to draw fans even now.

Bring It On

With so many memorable moments – like: “Brr! It’s cold in here, there must be some Toros in the atmosphere!” or Sparky Polastri’s famous “spirit fingers” – it’s no wonder this teen movie dominated the charts 20 years ago. In fact, its stars still appreciate how much that one film did for their careers, so much so that Gabrielle Union (who played Isis, captain of the Clovers) “reprised” her role by wearing her original Clovers costume for Halloween – and showed it off on Instagram – this past year!

Gladiator

The historical drama that made Russell Crowe a global household name opened in theatres in May 2000. Gladiator went on to score five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects and has been hailed as the movie that reinvented the old “swords & sandals” genre.

Erin Brockovich

Possibly the first time the silver screen ever featured the real-life story of a heroine like Erin Brockovitch, a single, unemployed mother of three who ends up representing a community whose water has been poisoned by a huge gas and electric company. This movie gave us hope on so many levels and continues to inspire today.

Almost Famous

This classic actually debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival! A semi-biographical coming-of-age music flick, Almost Famous gave us all the best parts of the ’70s in one funny, touching film.

Scary Movie

This totally classic Wayans Brothers comedy first hit theatres 20 years ago. The Wayans would go on to create four more hilarious horror movie spoofs to complete the franchise, the last of which was released in 2013. Who knows, maybe they’ll come back for more!

Cast Away

This survival drama came out of nowhere and smashed us all like a tidal wave bobbing Wilson around in the ocean. The drama left audiences with their mouths open, both by the movie and by the fact that Tom Hanks lost the Best Actor Oscar to Russell Crowe for his role in Gladiator.

Miss Congeniality

One of Chandler Bing’s favourite movies (he’d seen it so many times that he knew it through a wall) and one of ours, too. Because really, who can argue with Miss Rhode Island naming April 25th as her idea of the perfect date? “It’s not too hot, not too cold – all you need is a light jacket!”

Dude, Where’s My Car?

We laugh to ourselves just thinking about this classic stoner comedy in which Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott star as two dudes who can’t seem to remember what happened to their car the morning after a reckless night before. It was ridiculous and we loved it.

X-Men

We knew that this movie was amazing when we first saw it in theatres. But we could never have predicted the number of incredible series of prequels, sequels, and spin-off movies that have come out of this first cinematic effort from the Marvel Universe back then. Twenty years and 12 movies later, the series is still rolling, with another movie scheduled for release this year.
